What Are You Thankful For?

The roots of Thanksgiving go far beyond the harvest celebration of 1621 there at Plymouth Rock. Yes, these  colonists celebrated that first harvest and shared thanks with the Wampanoag which just two years later was recorded as an official "thanksgiving". But the roots of these immigrants go far beyond the Mayflower. It goes to the shores of England back over to a Dutch town called Leiden.

It's Leiden who faced a seize by the Spanish during the Eighty Years War and in 1574 the Dutch won victory in that city. It was forever their own Independence Day. Instead of fireworks and fanfare like we have here, they gave thanks with an annual tradition. Fast forward to that 1621 and it's Thanksgiving in the New World, and that tradition continued with the Pilgrims.

What are you thankful for? Whether times are great or tough, always remember that there's always something to be thankful for. I leave you with this poignant quote from Bob Dylan, "Even if you don't have all the things you want, be grateful for the things you don't have that you don't want."

What plans do you have for this Thanksgiving? Traveling? Spending time with family? Any Thanksgiving traditions you carry with you? Let us know in the comments.

Happy Thanksgiving from my family to yours.
