Policy & Mop: Connecticut Mandates Paid Time Off for All Employers
Jan 26, 2025
What: Connecticut's HB-5005
Why: New Requirement for Connecticut Employers with 25 Employees or More, with additional requirements in 2026 and 2027
Latest Update: 5/21/2024 - Signed into Law. Went into effect 1/1/2025.
Who: Applies only to Connecticut Business Owners
Connecticut is the latest state to require mandatory paid leave. House Bill, HB-5005, requires that all employers who employ 25 or more, must provide up to 40 hours of paid time off to those employees if those employees work at least 120 days per year. Connecticut joins other states that have some sort of paid time off rule and include Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Illinois, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, and New York all have required paid leave of some sort, as well as other states who have a statewide fund that employers are required to contribute to based on wages. The payroll company, Paycom, has a handy state by state guide highlighting these with additional links.
Not only is there a requirement on Connecticut employers who employ 25 or more, but effective in 2026, if you have 11 employees, you'll be required to provide paid time off. And in 2027, if you have 1 or more employee, you'll have to provide this benefit.
